How to Use Odia Keyboard

A quick guide to all three typing modes, plus shortcuts that make typing faster.

Choosing a typing mode

Use the dropdown above the typing box to switch modes. Which one to pick depends on what you already know:

• Transliteration — best if you don't know Odia spelling rules well. Type a word the way it sounds in English, and pick the closest match from a list of suggestions.
• INSCRIPT — best if you already know the standard INSCRIPT layout (common on government/typing courses). Each physical key always produces the same Odia character.
• Phonetic — best if you want instant conversion without pausing to pick from a list. Every letter you type is converted immediately, syllable by syllable.

Transliteration mode

Type a word phonetically in English, for example namaskar, then press Space. It converts automatically to ନମସ୍କାର.

While you're typing, a small popup appears near your cursor showing numbered alternatives — the way you meant to spell it might not be the top match. Use it like this:

• Click any suggestion to use it instead
• Or press ↑ / ↓ to highlight one, then Enter to pick it
• The last option in the list is always your raw English text, in case you want to keep it un-transliterated

INSCRIPT mode

This mirrors a physical INSCRIPT keyboard exactly — the on-screen keyboard shows you which key produces which character. Two extra keys change what a keypress produces:

• Shift — switches to the shift-layer character shown in the corner of each key
• Home (Caps) — locks the shift layer on, like Caps Lock

If you already know INSCRIPT from a physical keyboard, you can type directly on your keyboard in this mode — no need to click the on-screen keys.

Phonetic mode

Type letter by letter and watch the Odia syllable build in real time — there's no Space needed to trigger conversion, and no suggestion list. This is the fastest mode once you're used to it, but it always takes its best guess rather than offering alternatives.

Shortcuts that work in every mode

Note: since typing here rewrites the text box with JavaScript, our own Undo/Redo replaces your browser's built-in undo for this page — it works at the level of each action (a word, a click, a delete) rather than every single keystroke.

Other things on the page

• A− / A+ — resize the Odia text so it's easier to read while typing
• Recent words — words you've finished typing show up as quick-tap chips so you don't have to retype them
• Download / Share / Copy / Print — toolbar buttons above the keyboard, for getting your text out of the page
• Settings (gear icon, top right) — set your preferred default mode and manage dark mode
